The proposal is inspired by spectacular views of the Hyverfjall Volcano and its close proximity to the Myvatn Nature Baths, making the area a popular tourist attraction. The fulcrum of the concept is the form of a specific element: the greenhouse.

The primitive form of conventional greenhouses was explored and dissected into parameters governed by its important attributes and functions, mainly:

  • Materials to allow for the porosity of UV rays and maintaining the gained heat
  • Height to allow for the heat to rise and adequate stack ventilation
  • Modularity for future extension

The exploration led to divergence from the form of conventional greenhouses and paved the way for an interesting form-finding journey. Other important parameters were considered, namely:

  • The surrounding views, with particular attention given to framing the views of the majestic Hyverfjall Volcano
  • The building programme
  • The user’s experience and the relationship between the different spaces
  • Sustainability in the use of the materials and the operation of the complex

The end result is a form which stays loyal to the building’s central function as a greenhouse but seamlessly amalgamates the different uses in a linear way. Strict control is also maintained in the relationship between the different spaces. For example, considerable importance was given to the relationship between the restaurant and the greenhouse, exposing diners to the farm-to-table process. Contrastingly, an enclosed experience was maintained in other spaces which warrant a certain level of privacy or seclusion, such as the yoga space.
